Palace of the Governors

If there is one building that summarizes Santa Fe history it is the Palace of the Governors, an American Treasure and a registered National Historic Landmark. Plan to take one of their ‘Blue Gate’ walking tours of downtown to understand the importance of the river and the acequia madre.

El Rancho de las Golindrinas

If you really want to experience historic Santa Fe you need to visit El Rancho de las Golondrinas about 15 miles south of Santa Fe. The living history museum was once an important stop on the Camino Real. The 200 acre ‘rancho’ is in a rural valley southwest of Santa Fe called ‘La Cienega’ – a bucolic village where acequias still water the orchards and small farms of the locals.

The Royal Road linked Spain with New Spain/Mexico and eventually the United States. Santa Fe was one of the northern most destinations on this vital 1500 mile trade route. Southwestern Association for Indian Arts
